Safety mats - operating principle

Safety mats, also known as contact mats, are categorised as tactile sensors, as they detect mechanical movements.

They are used in an industrial setting, for area safeguarding, and prevent unchecked access. When the contact mat is stepped on, a short circuit is triggered. This is detected, the machine movement is stopped, and personal injuries are thus avoided.

Safety mats from ASO Safety Solutions

Manufacturer ASO Safety Solutions specialises in the production of safety sensors, which also include the patented Sentir® mat safety mats. The mats are highly resistant to external physical influences and the textured surface means the mats can be safely walked on.

The safety mats function according to the following principle: an insulating layer separates two conductive plates inside the mat from one another. If the mat is stepped on, the conductive plates touch, and a short circuit occurs. Area safeguarding is thus facilitated, as the mats can be easily joined together, and larger areas can thus be safeguarded. Expanding the area is simple. To do this, only the abutting edges need to be cut using a cutter, and the integrated connectors joined together. Up to ten mats can be joined together, whereby the overall surface area must not exceed 10 m².
