There is a difference between insulated wire end ferrules and wire end ferrules without insulation. The difference is that the insulated versions have a protective collar.
Cable ties were invented in 1954 by George M. Rapata. They are available in different widths, lengths and colours as well as from different materials such as polyamide 6.6, polyurethane and stainless steel. Since 1968 cable ties have been produced mainly from polyamide 6.6 by means of an injection molding process instead of from PVC. This results in improved product features such as weather resistance. They are also flame, abrasion- and deformation, grease, oil, chlorate and alkalis resistant as well as temperature-resistant from -40 °C to 85 °C. Acid resistance is conditional.
Advantages of insulated wire end ferrules
Insulated wire end ferrules offer some advantages over non-insulated versions, such as:
Both in terms of safety and handling, insulated wire end ferrules are preferable to the classic ones.
The protective collars bundle the strands and facilitate the connection of the terminals. In this way, kinking of the conductors is also avoided. In addition, the collar serves as insulation for the wires and provides additional voltage protection. The different colour variations of the plastic collars provide information about the conductor cross-section used. There are different standards, which must also be taken into account when using a particular conductor. These are, for example, German and French colour codes as well as DIN 46228.
